NCC CEO Stresses Collaborative Approach for Digital Transformation in Nigeria

Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has highlighted the importance of collaboration across all government levels and the legal sector for successful digital transformation in Nigeria. During the inaugural Annual Workshop for Attorneys-General on Emerging Issues in the Communications Sector held in Ikeja, Lagos, Dr. Maida underscored that effective communications regulation requires a “Whole-of-Government approach.” He pointed out that as the complexities in the communications sector grow, it is vital for federal, state, and legal entities to work cohesively. “Synergy in regulating communications is essential,” he asserted, noting that any sector’s growth, particularly one as fast-evolving as communications, hinges on cohesive oversight, which drives innovation, inclusivity, and economic development.

One of the key aims of the workshop is to evaluate the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003 to ensure its relevance in a rapidly evolving digital landscape characterized by advancements in technologies like AI, IoT, and broadband connectivity. Dr. Maida emphasized the pressing need to streamline taxes and levies within the communications sector, noting that inconsistent and overlapping taxation across different jurisdictions poses significant obstacles to investment and innovation. Additionally, the workshop addressed the imperative to resolve regulatory overlaps among government agencies, which Dr. Maida identified as essential for enhancing legal clarity and regulatory efficiency.

MTN collaborates with Huawei Technologies To Develop Fiber optic Protection System

MTN Nigeria is collaborating with Huawei Technologies to develop a system aimed at monitoring and protecting its fiber optic network from vandalism. In a recent report, CTO Yahaya Ibrahim revealed that MTN encountered over 9,000 cable cuts in 2024 alone, with 4,700 additional incidents documented by June 2025, totaling approximately 13,700 cable cuts in just 18 months.

The analysis of these incidents reveals regional disparities, with around 2,500 cable cuts occurring in northern Nigeria, 2,800 in the southwest, and a combined total of 3,500 in the southeast and south-south regions. Ibrahim noted that the Southeast and South-South regions are hotspots for fiber vandalism, particularly in states like Akwa Ibom, Abia, and Rivers. Specific locations such as Omoku and Egbema are highlighted as areas particularly affected by fiber vandalization.

Vandalism and road construction account for a staggering 69 percent of the total cable cuts, leading to significant service disruptions for customers. The implementation of AI technology is seen as a necessary step to mitigate these issues and enhance the security of MTN’s infrastructure.
