Qualcomm Surges Ahead in Global Telecoms Patent Race

In a fiercely competitive innovation landscape, Qualcomm has cemented its position as the undisputed leader in telecommunications patents—outpacing rivals like Samsung and Ericsson. This dominance comes as the global smartphone boom and the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) push telecom patents into the spotlight as strategic assets.

In just two years, Qualcomm racked up nearly 8,000 telecom-related patents—more than twice that of any competitor. The firm registered 3,599 patents in 2023 and 4,263 in 2024. Celebrating its 45th anniversary, Qualcomm continues to lead the charge in chipmaking and standardized cellular technologies, with a robust patent licensing portfolio generating $1.32 billion in Q1 2025 alone.

With new licensing deals in China and ongoing negotiations with Apple and Samsung, Qualcomm’s patent strategy remains as aggressive as ever—even as a new dispute brews with MediaTek. As telecom technologies power AI, IoT, and 5G, Qualcomm’s IP muscle is shaping the future of connectivity.

Airtel Nigeria Sets New Benchmark with 38MW Hyperscale Data Centre

Airtel Nigeria has announced a bold plan to build a massive 38-megawatt hyperscale data centre in Lagos’ Eko Atlantic City, marking a significant leap in Nigeria’s digital infrastructure drive. Branded “Nxtra by Airtel”, the facility is set to go live by Q1 2026 and will cater to hyperscalers, businesses, and government agencies alike.

Spanning over 300,000 square feet and housing more than 3,000 racks across six floors, the centre is designed for high-performance workloads—including AI and GPU-intensive applications. With up to 25kW per rack, it positions Nigeria as a competitive destination for cloud and digital services.

Airtel’s investment underscores its long-term commitment to powering West Africa’s digital economy through world-class infrastructure. Nxtra is expected to deliver not just capacity, but also resilience, scalability, and strategic support for Nigeria’s growing data needs.

NCC Launches Corporate Governance Overhaul to Boost Telecom Sector Confidence

Faced with a sharp 58% dip in telecom sector foreign investment in Q1 2025, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has responded with a sweeping new Corporate Governance Framework aimed at restoring investor trust and enhancing sector stability.

With the Nigerian telecom market projected to grow from $9.52 billion to $11.97 billion, the NCC’s reforms couldn’t be more timely. The framework promotes transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership across licensed operators, addressing persistent concerns like infrastructure vandalism, FX scarcity, and regulatory gaps.

More than just a response to dwindling FDI, this initiative reflects NCC’s strategic vision to future-proof the industry. By strengthening governance structures, the Commission seeks to create a fertile ground for innovation, attract sustainable capital, and reinforce telecom’s vital role in Nigeria’s digital economy.

MTN Nigeria Nears Equity Breakthrough, Eyes Dividend Resumption by Q3 2025

MTN Nigeria is poised to resume dividend payouts by the third quarter of 2025, following a dramatic turnaround in its equity position after two years of investor anxiety.

Once weighed down by a negative equity of ₦458.01 billion at the end of 2024, the telco has clawed its way back—narrowing the deficit to just ₦42.51 billion as of mid-2025. Analysts at CardinalStone project a full return to positive equity by Q3, clearing the path for the long-awaited dividend resumption.

This rebound reflects MTN’s strategic recalibration: robust data revenue, smarter tower lease negotiations, and benefits from FX stability have all bolstered the company’s financial standing. An impressive 53.7% EBITDA margin in Q2 2025 further signals operational strength.

For investors, MTN’s comeback is more than financial—it’s symbolic. It reinforces the telco’s status as a stable, dividend-reliable stock on the NGX and marks a renewed era of growth and shareholder value creation.
